Return to Press ReleasesLetters to the Editor 6/15/17The Loyalton Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank the community and surrounding areas for the continued support of our annual Spaghetti Feed fund raiser held at the Sierra Brooks Lodge on May 13. Your generosity and continuous support in purchasing presale ticket, donations and partaking in the evening of fun is very much appreciated by the volunteers of the department. We served approximately 165 dinners and sold 200 presale tickets. The dinner was complimented with cake and ice cream with a special thank you to Nicole McGuire, daughter of volunteer Matt McGuire, for making the cakes for dinner and the raffle. We would also like to thank the other donors for the raffle prizes. I would also like to thank the team of volunteer firefighters that work to put on the fund raising event but more importantly the time they volunteer to the department for the required training and responding to emergency calls at all times of the day or night. The department continues to update equipment with the newest addition of a 2000 fire truck needed to replace a failing 1987 engine. I was delighted to see the photo on the cover of the June 2017 Booster. Both of my grandparents are in that photo, as well of some of their siblings and cousins. Most sincerely, Kaysia Barr Miramonte, Ca. Fire Tax Update From Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association: A big thank you to all who have submitted information about their experience with the fire fee. We heard from over one thousand of you! As a result, we received hundreds of affidavits demonstrating the illegitimacy of the fee all over California. We will attach these to our motion to show that the fee is not providing specific benefit to each payor and is therefore a tax. The motion will be literally “massive†as we envisioned. If you have received our affidavit but have not had time to review it, please take a few moments to do so. Further, please do not be afraid to let us know if you have received inspections from CAL FIRE, particularly multiple or even annual inspections which could be the case if you are in a high fire hazard zone. In fact, we would appreciate such information to support another portion of our motion. Please email laura@hjta.org if you have received more than one CAL FIRE inspection. In addition to testimony from payors like yourself, we are now receiving communications from organizations and professionals who have compelling information to share. We are very proud of the exhibits coming together for our motion from a wide range of sources. If the case goes up on appeal, we will have built a strong foundation. We are doing everything possible to streamline the intake and editing of these vital exhibits and hope to have our motion filed in the next 4-6 weeks. Opposing counsel must be afforded adequate time to oppose our motion and we will be afforded time to reply to their opposition. We can expect a hearing on the motion approximately three months after filing, and then there will be a decision from the Sacramento Superior Court. Thank you for supporting this effort by HJTA. We further wish to thank the most important element, the car owners/enthusiast who traveled considerable distances to get here and to the general public who attended, without you, this event would not have been possible or the success that it was. A big thank you to those locally in providing services to the community and or their presence was our very own Loyalton Volunteer Fire Department, Milton Gottardi Museum Staff, U.S. Forest Service in their team providing “Smokey Bear,†Officer Preston of the California Highway Patrol, Assembly of God Church in the use of their property, Intermountain Disposal, Plumas Sanitation, District 3 Supervisor Paul Roen for moving & displaying antique logging equipment and placing it at the museum; Mr. Jim Dobba's of Newcastle/Sierra Valley for his display of antique trucks, Bruce out of Reno who displayed his antique Diamond-T and others who displayed their antique equipment. Not to be left out is our Sierra County Department of Public Works in providing their much needed services and that of the Public Works Department in the City of Loyalton. Finally, last but not least, the Sierra County Sheriff's Department in keeping a diligent eye open the night before while staging was performed in the event area.
