Here's How Psychologists Say You Should Talk To Kids About Marriage Equality

"It is always a good thing to be talking with children in constructive, positive, tolerance-building ways."

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) has released a guide for how to talk to children about same-sex marriage, as Australians prepare to vote in a postal survey on the issue.

The APS is Australia's largest professional organisation for psychologists, with more than 22,000 members. It released the guide last week and has an official position of supporting marriage equality.

Dr Susie Burke, a senior psychologist with the APS, told BuzzFeed News the first thing adults should know is that they can actually talk to their kids about same-sex marriage.

Lesbian couple turned away from bridal store because of religious owners

The shop, W.W. Boutique in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, handed the couple a form to fill out when they got there.
The form asked for the name of the bride and groom, and so they crossed out groom and replaced it with Kennedy’s name.

When they handed the form back to the assistant, she reportedly asked if the wedding would be same-sex.
When the assistant came to realise this, she told the couple that the shop could not be of service to them.

Kennedy explained: “She said, ‘I don’t know if you’ve heard, but we’re Christian and we don’t believe in that; our faith doesn’t let us believe in that’.”

Armenia Recognizes Same-Sex Marriages Performed Abroad

It is only the second former Soviet nation to recognize same-sex marriages of any kind.

While Germany celebrates the passage of same-sex marriage, another European nation is taking baby steps toward equality: Armenia has begun recognizing same-sex marriages performed abroad.

In an email to PanArmenian.Net, the Ministry of Justice indicated that marriage certificates registering the legal union of two people abroad are valid in the country after consular legalization, regardless of the participants’ gender.

That makes Armenia only the second former Soviet country after Estonia to recognize same-sex marriages performed abroad.

Colorado Baker: Jesus Would Refuse To Serve Gays

Law Newz reports:

After the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear his case, Colorado baker Jack Phillips appeared Thursday on ABC’s The View to explain why he refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple.

He told hosts that the bible said marriage was only between a man and a woman. When asked if Jesus would’ve done the same, he said yes. “I don’t believe that Jesus would’ve made a cake if he had been a baker,” Phillips. “Jesus would’ve made the cake,” said host Joy Behar.

To make the cake would’ve contradicted his religious beliefs, he argued. Sitting by his attorney Kristen Waggoner, he said he would’ve served other products to the couple, Charlie Craig and David Mullins, but not for their wedding.

Waggonner works for Alliance Defending Freedom, which as most of you surely know, advocates internationally for criminalizing homosexuality.

German parliament votes to legalize same-sex marriage

Germany's parliament voted by a wide margin on Friday to legalize same-sex marriage after Chancellor Angela Merkel did an about-face that freed members of her ruling conservative bloc to follow their personal conscience rather than the party line.

Merkel, who will seek a fourth term in a national election on Sept. 24, told reporters after the landmark decision that she had voted against the measure because she believed that marriage as defined under German law was between a man and a woman.
