Letters 6/8/23

Tourist season has officially arrived.
At about 11:15 today I parked at the Sierra County road closed sign on Gold Lake Road at the Haskell Peak (USFS 09) turnoff.
I walked up Gold Lake Road and over the snow to Upper Salmon Lake. It was a beautiful day with fluffy clouds, I had the whole place to myself.
That is until we (Quincy, my dog, is terrified of gun shots) were walking back out and the gunshots started. I could hear what sounded like two different guns, as it turned out I was correct in guessing a pistol and a rifle. As we walked closer it sounded like it was coming from one of the cabins at Lusk Meadows. Nope. The fool in his truck and trailer had driven past the road closed signs and he was stopped in the middle of Gold Lake Road at Salmon Lake Road near where the County snow plow and blower were parked. I waited between reloads and began yelling, at them to stop and not shoot in my direction.
This man and his teenage son told me they had been shooting at cans in the snow. Directly beyond the cans are the cabins at Lusk Meadows.
If a snowmobiler had been coming from the Graeagle direction, he was aiming right at them. He told me it was perfectly legal to shoot from a road because he was in the National Forest. I told him it wasn't either legal or safe and pointed out the roof of one of the cabins in the direction he was shooting. I'm glad he didn't decide to shoot down Salmon Lake Road instead or I might not be here to talk about it.
Be careful out there friends, PEOPLE ARE STUPID!

Excellent edition with the W.P.R.R. Museum. Great to see a local paper that's still on paper.

Dear Editor
I was truly pleased reading the May 25th Booster. Telling of the all the positive things in our County, like the donations to the Class of 2023, the Honoring of Sheriff Fisher for all he's done for us. Of course I can't miss enjoying all the FFA, the Grants to the students, the sports events, the 3rd Grade Stars of The Week portraits. And don't forget that cute dog on the back. Keep up that good work!
Yes, we ALL know that there are problems with our Local, County, State, and Federal governments, but I was particularly amazed by those two ancient Loyaltonians focusing their vitriol on their Own, Local government. Perhaps they should continue to shape our local governments. Become a City Council Member, or run for Supervisor. Please do something other than rant and rave about a government "level" they can't hope to do anything about.
Gee Whiz, it's hard to believe that Mr Dotta wouldn't accept Free alcohol. All he'd have to do is joust and spar with his favorite so called Marxist. I guess he realized that he couldn't argue with the facts. Oh well... In passing, I'll point out to "Feets", that my Naked body is now clothed. BTW, Thumbs! Up to Candance Fisher, Rick Maddalena - and of course Don McKechnie for their letters.
Sincerely,
Russell Rosewood, Calpine

I have to disagree with “it's the gun, stupid.” What other inanimate object is blamed for “doing” evil things? Is "it's the car stupid" for drunk driving? Left to its own devices, the gun and car will sit and collect dust. I know people talk about “mass shootings” and that's it. No details. No context. I wonder how many of these mass shootings are gang related. I wonder if there are certain geographical locations that have most of the gun crimes. I wonder how many of these shootings use the dreaded "assault rifle." How many times have firearms been used defensively compared to offensively? If somebody shoots two gremlins dead in self defense, is that considered a mass shooting for the statistics? I know suicides are included in the statistics regarding guns, and that is ridiculous. “Red flag” laws have failed several times recently because the people charged with enforcing them didn't do it. Parkland, Colorado Springs, Buffalo, Fed Ex in Indi-ana – all those states had red flag laws when the shootings occurred. Last night, a man in the North Valleys outside of Reno, allegedly stepped in the street, shot several rounds into the air and went back inside. Police showed up, saw the video a neighbor recorded and responded "there's nothing we can do." And now, people want us to turn over more power to those same agencies? Sure. THAT sounds reasonable. What could possibly go wrong? Another topic is “universal background checks.” IF someone can come up with a way to institute this and not create a federal data bank with the definitive list of gun owners, I'm all for it. Otherwise, history has shown that when governments take the populace's guns, they first get that list, and bad things happen from there. Did anybody else see the Australian police's enforcement of their covid laws? How about Canada's? Both took away the firearms and the police acted like bullies to enforce bad law. “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” comes to mind. I also read that about 337 people were responsible for a large percentage of the shoplifting crimes in New York. Is it better to punish all New Yorkers in some form or get those few hundred and lock them up? Find the ones who have used guns in crimes and lock them up. My guess is that there are a very limited bunch committing the majority of the gun crimes. “Banning guns” is a bumper sticker solution to a very complex problem. The name calling, condescension, and arrogance isn't a solution for anything.
Sincerely,
Mark Green, Reno, NV
