Regarding Federal Funding for LibrariesDear editor at Sierra Booster,The library was my sanctuary growing up—a place of safety, discovery, and belonging. I remember walking through its doors when I had nowhere else to go, returning time and time again because it held pieces of my past. The Sparks Library on 12th Street was my favorite. I can still recall the scent of old pages, the way the light filtered through the windows into the children's garden, and the sense of escape it provided—a refuge I carried into adulthood. The thought that other children might be denied that same refuge is heartbreaking. A library is more than just books; it is the heart of a community. It represents the best of us—our commitment to knowledge, curiosity, and inclusivity. Yet today, libraries are under attack, targeted by those who misunderstand or fear their purpose. The dismantling of such an institution is a disgrace, and history will not look kindly on those who stood by and allowed it to happen. I refuse to be silent. I refuse to look back and wonder if I could have done more. I will stand, speak out, and support every effort to protect our libraries—and I urge you to do the same.
